Add more to Moyer’s HR record, as Phillies fall to Braves 7-5

Moyer.jpg   Martin Prado and Brian McCann both added more to Moyer’s HR record last night. Moyer has now given up 509 HR in his career, but the biggest stat of the night was that the Braves now have a 3 game lead in the NL East.

Martin Prado started the game off with a leadoff HR. The Phillies then answered back in the bottom of the second off of a J-Roll double that knocked in Wilson Valdez and a 2 run homer from Howard in the fifth. Moyer appeared to be in a nice groove after that leadoff HR, until Prado again hit another HR. Then the aging Moyer started to fall apart. Brian McCann hit a double to deep center, three runs scored. Then came number 509 when Matt Diaz hit a 2 run HR to center. Baez came in and retired the next 3 batters. Phillies did show some resiliance. In the seventh Victorino homered, that knocked Medlen out of the game, then Ben Francisco had a Pinch Hit RBI in the 8th inning. Wagner came in for the save in the ninth and reitred the side in order. Final score, Braves 7 Phillies 5.

Phillies are now 6 games behind the Braves in the NL East. Their last series before the all star break is against the Reds. Kyle Kendrik is going to get the start tomorrow. He is 5-3 with a 4.70 ERA. Kyle pitched a CG his last start, allowing  three earned on ten hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts. Johnny Cueto will be pitching for the Reds. Cueto is 8-2 with a 3.56 ERA. In his last start he went 5 innings, without giving up a run on 7 hits and 5 walks with only 2 Ks.

Question: Phillies are struggling and there are plenty of trade talks involving the Phils. My question is what trades do you think the Phillies will make or should make? Do they trade Werth Or Ibanez? Brown seems to be ready. What do you think the Phillies need pitching, another bat?

A Great Ending to a Perfect Halladay

Halladay.jpg  It may have been the end of the 4th of July but there was still plenty of fireworks in Philly. The Phillies came into this game 5 games back in the NL East. Roy Halladay planned to come out only 4 games back.

Things did not start out well for Halladay as he let up a solo home run to Chipper Jones, but after that Roy Halladay was outstanding. He pitched a CG allowing 1 ER with 7 Ks and only 1 walk, with only 93 pitches! The Phillies offense looked like they would not help Halladay until the sixth inning when a struggling Greg Dobbs blasted a 2 run HR over the right field wall. Castro then added an insurance run with an RBI single between short and third. Final score Phillies 3 Braves 1. Tomorrow Hamels takes the mound for the Phillies. Cole Hamels is 6-7 with a 4.07 ERA. In his last start Hamels allowed 3 ERs on 5 hits and 2 walks with 8 Ks. Braves will send Jair Jurrens to the mound. Jurrjens is 1-3 with a 5.59 ERA. Jurrjens his last start went 5 innings allowed 1 earned on 6 hits, 2 walks and 6 Ks. This was his first start since coming off the DL with a hamstring injury. Hamels needs to come out with a much needed win to get the Phillies only 3 games behind the Braves for the lead in the NL East.

The Phillies will be represented by Utley, Howard, and Halladay in the all star game next week. Utley will not be able to play because of his thumb injury. Charlie Manuel, who is the manager for the NL, left out Stephen Strasburg in his roster.

Side Notes: Happ says he is ready to return to the Phillies rotation but Manuel says he wants Happ to make a couple more starts in Lehigh Valley to make sure he is 100% when he returns.

Pitchers and Catchers report to Spring Training soon

Thumbnail image for Halladay-Phillies.jpgThe 2009 baseball season is now in the rear veiw mirror, as the 2010 baseball season is getting closer. The 2010 season for pitchers and catchers begin February 16th. One of those pitchers will be Roy Halladay whom the phillies traded for during the off season. The major questions for the phillies pitching are the bullpen and the 5th spot in the starting rotation. Phillies aquired some bullpen additions like Jose Contreras and Danny Baez. Phillies did lose Scott Eyre and Chan Ho Park. Now for the 5th spot in the 2010 Phillies starting rotation. Canidates Jaime Moyer, Kyle Kendrick, and Andrew Carpenter. In a recent interview with Fox 29 New Ruben Amaro Jr. said that it would be Moyer’s spot to lose. Jamie Moyer is 47 years old and just had two surgeries in the off season. I personally think Moyer will not keep his job. Kyle Kendrick to me is the favorite unless Andrew Carpenter has an unbelievable spring training. As for catchers, Phillies acquired Brian Schnieder in FA. Schnieder will be a nice backup to Ruiz and is a verteran that knows how to call games.

Side Notes: This has nothing to do with phillies or baseball but Congratulations to the 2009-2010 NFL Champion New Orleans Saints. It is a great story and a great season for the Saints.

NLCS Dodgers vs. Phillies

Cole Hamels.jpgThursday night will be the second time in a row the Phillies and Dodgers will meet in the NLCS. Dodgers are coming off a three game sweep of the highly favored Cardinals. They beat both Cy Young canidates Wainwright and Carpenter during the sweep. Phillies beat a very hot Rockies team in 4 with an unforgettable comeback win in game 4. The first pitching matchup in the series will be Hamels and Wolf. Hamels in his career has been lights out against the Dodgers. He is 1-0 this year 14 innings and only 1 ER against the Dodgers. Wolf is 11-7 with a 3.23 ERA. Wolf is a lefty so that could give the phillies some trouble but the way the lineup has been hitting I don’t care who they put up their the phillies are going to score. Ruiz, Ibanez, Victorino, Werth, Howard, and Utley all hit above .300 in the NLDS and Ryan Howard tied A-Rod for the most RBIs in the the division series. If you thought there was a problem with the phillies bullpen man did they prove you wrong. They made some big pitches in some tough situations, especially Lidge. Yes Madson did give up the lead in the 8th but I expect him to do some good things against the Dodgers as a setup man. If he doesn’t do well you still have some guys who can pitch the 8th. Like Durbin for example setup a game against the Rockies. Eyre can come in for a leftie situation or possibly Myers could setup. Their is only one hole in for the phillies right now and that is who they pitch game 3. Probable pitchers would be Happ, Martinez, or Blanton. Personally I think Martinez should not start because Blanton and Happ can go deeper in games. I think Blanton should and will get the start, he has faced the Dodgers in the playoffs before and has experience. Happ got the start last time only because the Rockies struggled against lefties. I do think Happ will be a factor in the bullpen as a leftie specialist if Eyre pitches back-to-back games. I predict phillies in 5. Hamels and Lee win games 1 and 2, Blanton loses game three, then Hamels/Happ and Hamels/Lee win the last two.

Side Note: Has anybody had a Deja Vu. Last year the phillies won game 1 lost game 2 and won the series in 4.This year phillies won game 1 lost game 2 and won the series in 4. Last year we wanted the Dodgers to win so we wouldn’t have to face a good Cubs team. This year we wanted the Dodgers win so we wouldn’t have to face the 2 Cy Young canidates Wainwright and Carpenter. Just saying it sounds like the same storyline so far, hope it stays that way with a World Series win in the end

GO PHILLIES!!!!!

Braves find Lee’s Kryptonite

Lee coming in was an amazing 5-0 with a 0.68 with the phillies. Everyone expected Lee to
Thumbnail image for anderson.jpghave another great preformance in a big game inside the division but the Braves thought otherwise. Bottom of the 1st Utley hit a solo shot to deep right. So Cliff Lee had a lead going into the 2nd and kept that lead until the 5th. Lee gave up two singles to start the inning, then Garret Anderson hit a line drive home run to right. Garret Anderson (Lee’s Kryptonite) lifetime is batting .412 and has 8 RBI against Lee including todays game. Anderson ended the game 3 for 3 with 3 RBI off of Lee. After that home run Lee could not get going again. He let up 3 more runs and they came off a two run home run from Matt Diaz and a solo shot from Yunel Escobar. Durbin came in to relieve Lee and he didn’t do any better. The Braves hit three more off of Durbin two coming of a Chipper Jones two run homer. Phillies could have been in this game but they only had one run on ELEVEN HITS. Either Lowe was on lock down when he got into jams or the phillies just can’t knock in RISP. I would have to go with the phillies struggling with RISP. It is just embarrising to have one run on eleven hits. The phillies even had bases loaded with no outs and got no runs out of it. Howard and Werth both struck out and Ibanez flied out. It was so bad that even mother nature had enough. The game ended in the 8th because of rain and lightning. Final score 9-1.

Tomorrow the phillies will look to win this three game series against the Braves. Blanton is going to be the pitcher for the phils. He is 8-6 with a 3.88 ERA. His last start he went 6 innings allowed 3 ER and got a ND. Pitching for the Braves will be Jair Jurrens. He is 10-8 with a 2.91 ERA. His last start he went 7.2 innings allowed 1 ER and came away with a ND.

Side Note
: Myers had another rehab start today he went 2 innings allowed 1 ER had 2 strikeouts and no walks.

Howard powers Phillies past Braves

howard2.jpgRyan Howard is on fire this month and showed that today delivering twice for the phillies. 2nd inning Howard leads off with a solo home run to left center field. When Howard is hittting opposite field you know he is hot. Then the phillies had two rain delays which forced them to take Pedro Martinez out. The last time this happened Moyer came in and went 6 innings had 5 strikeouts and allowed 0 ER. Moyer came in for Martinez again and same story. He went 4.1 innings allowed 1 ER and had 5 strikeouts. In the 4th inning Ryan Howard blasted a two run home run to deep center. That two run shot has him 7 RBI behind Fielder for the leauge lead, and 4 HR behind Pujols for the leauge lead. Howard finished the game 3-3 with a walk and 3 RBI. In the 7th the struggling Ibanez leadoff the inning with a triple. Then Pedro Feliz drove him in to make the score 4-1. Madson came in to pitch in the 8th to hold the game for the closer. First batter, leadoff double. Here we go again…not. Madson only let up the one run getting Adam LaRoche to fly out with 2 outs and bases loaded. Lidge, after blowing his last save on six pitches, had a 1-2-3 inning and converted a save. WHAT!?!?! Lidge actually got a save? Yes and that save can hopefully turn into many saves and more saves into the postseason. Overall this game was huge for the phillies. They are now 8 games ahead of the Braves and Marlins, Moyer is and Martinez are both looking good and have a chance to win with either one of them pitching and Madson and Lidge both can try and feed of this game.

Tomorrow the undefeated philly Cliff Lee will pitch. Lee is 5-0 with an amazing 0.68 ERA in a phils uniform. He went 7 innings and allowed 0 ER and got the win his last start. Lowe will take the hill for the Braves. He is 12-8 with a 4.48 ERA. Lowe got a ND his last start only going 5 innings allowing 3 ER.

GO PHILLIES!

Phils head home UnHapp-y

McCutchen.jpgPhillies come in this game looking to go a season high 23 games above five hundred. Happ is looking to become the phillies first rookie pitcher to win 11 games in 29 years. The phils bats would help early. In the top of the first bases loaded Ryan Howard grounded into a fielders choice and Rollins came into score on the play. Happ would give the game right back giving up a leadoff home run to Andrew McCutchen. Bako next inning would hit a solo shot to give the phils a one run lead. That would be it for the phillies bats. The rookie Happ was pitching lights out. He was pitching guys inside, outside, high, low, and kept them off balance. Until the 8th. Two outs runner on first two outs Garret Jones is the batter and then Garret Jones is the hero. He went yard and that would be the game winner. Phillies lose the game 2-3 and lose the series 1-2. Another dissapointing series against the pirates. There is only one good positive you can get out of this game and that is Lidge or Madson did not blow a save this game. Phillies are going to head home for a three game series with the Braves. If the phillies sweep the braves they will be 10 games ahead of them in the East. So a big series for the phils. Pedro will start the first game of the series. Martinez is 2-0 with a 5.14 ERA. He was roughed up a bit his last start going 6 innings allowing 4 ER. The Braves will send their rookie sensation Tommy Hanson to the mound. Hanson is 9-2 with a 3.12 ERA. His last start he went 7 innings allowing 3 runs.

Side Notes: Clay Condrey pitched a simulated game Thursday. Myers is expected to come back the first week of September.

Phils win in extras off of Howards HR

Thumbnail image for howard.jpgAfter a disapponting loss the phillies wanted to start this game off with a bang. There is no way better to do that than with a solo shot from Chase Utley in the top of the 1st. That was the only run that Hamels would get and he would make the most of it. Hamels had a 2008 like preformance as he went 8 innings allowed 0 runs on 7 hits and had 7 strikeouts. He did get into jams but he got out of them which he wasn’t doing his past 3 starts. While this was all positive the phillies still had issues in the back of their bullpen. Lidge wasn’t available after pitching 4 straight games so they went with setup man Madson. Ryan Madson has closed before but he also wasn’t lights out. Coming in Madson has had 8 opportunities and only converted 4 saves. Well that changed to 4 saves on 9 opp. on a 1-2 fastball down the middle to Brandon Moss and he didn’t miss. Another blown save for the phillies, now we are going to extras. Top of the tenth runners on first and third and red hot Ryan Howard steps in. First pitch changeup and Howard hits every part of the ball. Three run home run and phillies take a three run lead. The game winner now has Howard 4th in home runs with 35 and tied third with Pujols with 107 RBI. A three run lead was enough for Madson and the phillies won 4-1.

Side notes: Myers went two innings 5 strikeouts 0 earned runs and only allowed 1 hit. If Lidge continues to struggle the phillies would have to put Myers in the closer spot. Myers has closed before in 2007 and converted 20 saves on 24 opp. So phillies fans can only hope that Manuel would be willing to take Lidge out of the closer spot and put in Myers.

Unbe-Lee-vable (update)

clifflee2.jpgCliff Lee got his fifth win today against the Mets. He went 7 innings allowing 0 ER on six hits and had 5 strikeouts. That makes him 5-0 with a 0.68 in a Phillies uniform. Ryan Howard stayed hot hitting two home runs, one a three run shot, and the other a two run shot.Howard is only the second player in phillies franchise history to have four consecutive 30 home run 100 RBI seasons. The other phillie to do this was Chuck Klein. Final score was 6-2 phillies. Phillies won the series 3-1 against the injured Mets. Now the phils are going to head to Pittsburgh for a 3 game series with the Pirates. Blanton will be on the hill for the phillies. Blanton (RHP) is coming in with a 3.86 ERA with a 8-6 record. He went 8 innings allowing 3 ER and came out with a win his last outing against the D-Backs. Ohlendorf (RHP) will start for the Pirates he is 11-6 with a 4.15 ERA. He got a win his last start going 7 innings only giving up 1 ER. The philles should sweep this below .500 team and hope to strengthen their lead in the East.

Side Notes: Jayson Werth was named player of the week he had a .440 average driving in 9 RBI. Myers rehab start was rained out Sunday and is expected to make a start today.

Update: Myers pitched one scoreless inning last night he had one strikeout and a walk. Rueben Amaro Jr. said Myers will need five or more rehab starts. Myers said he needs only two or three.

Phillies Head Home against Colorado

The phillies have just came off a terrible road trip and are going to try and turn things around
Moyer.jpgat home. Jamie Moyer (LHP) is going to pitch the first game of three with the Rockies. Moyer is 10-7 with a 5.32 era. He is coming off a solid preformance his last outing going 6.2 innings allowing 0 ER. The Rockies have Jason Hammel (RHP) pitching. He is 5-6 with a 4.66 era. His last outing was terrible going 1.1 innings pitched allowing 5 ER. Phillies should get some runs off this guy but to win they are gonna need to play solid defense with moyer on the mound. With the phillies you usually don’t worry about their defense but the way the last road trip went you got to worry. They had 5 errors on the road trip and that has haunted them. So in order for the phils to get out of this funk they need to start playing more solid defense.

Just some side notes Victorino seemed to be running fun but it will be up to Manuel to see when he fells the all-star is ready. Martinez had a bullpen session today and worked on pitching from the stretch. Also people who get Comcast Sportsnet philly, at 7:30 turn on Comcast and watch the Pen. It is about the phils bullpen and it is narrated by Mitch Williams. Usually it is on the MLB network and I don’t get that so I am definently going to watch it.
